Instead of memorising endless vocabulary lists, you’ll learn naturally through short, funny stories about everyday life in Slovakia. Each lesson builds on the previous one, helping you gain confidence one story at a time.
📚How These Slovak Beginner Stories Work
The stories are designed to be read in order, as each lesson introduces new vocabulary and grammar while revising what you’ve already learned. Each lesson follows the same learning structure so you always know what to expect.
1. Read the Story
The stories are short, funny and full of situations you’ll recognise if you’ve ever visited or lived in Slovakia.
2. Check Your Understanding
Answer multiple-choice questions to see how much you understood before moving on.
3. Learn Useful Vocabulary
Review the most important words and phrases from the story with clear English explanations.
4. Understand the Grammar
Instead of long grammar lectures, you’ll discover one useful grammar point explained using examples from the story.
5. Practise
Complete simple exercises that reinforce the vocabulary and grammar you’ve just learned. By the end of each lesson, you’ll have read authentic Slovak, learned practical vocabulary and gained confidence without feeling overloaded.
⭐ Before You Start: Don’t Try to Understand Every Word
Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single word.
In fact, you’re not supposed to.
On your first reading, focus on understanding the overall situation, not translating every sentence.
After you’ve completed the vocabulary, grammar and exercises, read the story again.
You’ll be surprised how much more you understand the second time.
Remember: Progress isn’t measured by how many words you translate. It’s measured by how much more you understand each time you read.

What does A0 mean?
A0 is a pre-beginner level designed for learners with no previous knowledge of Slovak.
These stories use short sentences, everyday vocabulary and plenty of repetition to help you start reading Slovak from your very first lesson.
English support is included throughout the lessons, so you can understand the story without constantly reaching for a dictionary.
Do I need to understand every word?
No.
In fact, trying to translate every word will often slow down your progress.
On your first reading, focus on understanding the overall situation rather than every individual sentence. Ask yourself:
- Who is speaking?
- Where are they?
- What’s happening?
- Can I follow the conversation?
After you’ve completed the vocabulary, grammar and exercises, read the story again. You’ll be surprised how much more you understand the second time.
The goal isn’t to translate every word—it’s to understand a little more each time you read.

Each episode introduces a small amount of new vocabulary and grammar while revising language from previous lessons. Reading them in order will help you build confidence and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
By the end of the A0 series, you’ll have a solid foundation before moving on to A1.
What happens after I finish A0?
Once you’ve completed all five A0 stories, you’ll be ready to continue with the A1 Beginner Stories, where you’ll read longer dialogues, expand your vocabulary and become more confident using everyday Slovak.
