Sometimes, when you don’t understand what is happening, your imagination can make things much worse.
This happened to me one dark night in Northern Ireland, when I was looking after a big house, several animals, and one very strange-looking red light.
Looking After the House
I was an au pair in a large house in the countryside. The family went on holiday for three weeks, so they left me in charge of the house and the animals.
My boyfriend was staying with me, so I wasn’t completely alone. We were both a little nervous because the house was enormous and there were lots of rules.
There were many rooms, long corridors and large windows. Outside, there were fields, trees, horses and dogs. The nearest neighbours were quite far away, so the house felt very quiet at night.
The family also left us a long list of instructions.
“Feed the horses twice a day.”
“Don’t forget the dogs.”
“Check the doors when you go to bed.”
“And don’t let the chickens out.”
There were so many rules that I was afraid of forgetting something.
The First Night
The first night was quiet because everyone else was away. It was very dark outside because there were no street lights near the house.
We walked the dogs, fed the horses, and cleaned the stables. The stable was cold and smelled of hay and animals.
“Are you sure this is a holiday?” my boyfriend asked.
“Almost,” I said.
Everything was fine, although one of the dogs decided to eat a piece of rope.
“Oh no!” I shouted.
My boyfriend looked at the dog.
“What is she doing?”
“She’s eating the rope!”
“Why?”
“I have no idea!”
We took the dog to the vet, so we didn’t get much sleep that night.
Luckily, the dog was fine, but we were very tired the next day.
A Strange Red Light
A few days later, everything was quiet again.
Then came the fourth night.
We were both exhausted because we had spent the whole day looking after the animals.
It was late, so I went upstairs to close the curtains.
When I reached the window, I looked outside.
At first, I saw nothing.
Then I noticed a strange red light in the distance.
I stopped because I didn’t know what it was.
“What is that?” I asked.
My boyfriend looked up from his phone.
“What?”
“That light. Over there.”
“Where?”
I pointed towards the fields.
“Can you see it?”
He looked through the window while I stood next to him.
“I can see something.”
“It looks like fire.”
He looked again.
“Maybe it’s a house.”
“But it’s getting bigger.”
The red light was slowly growing, so I became more worried.
It was also getting brighter, so I started to panic.
Is There a Fire?
“There’s a fire!” I said.
My boyfriend looked at me.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes! Look!”
I imagined flames spreading across the fields and reaching the house.
“The house is going to burn down!” I said.
I ran downstairs to find the phone because I wanted to call the fire department.
“Where is the phone?” I shouted.
“I don’t know!” my boyfriend shouted back.
“I need to call the fire department!”
“But where is the fire?”
“I don’t know!”
We looked outside again while the red light continued to grow.
The light was still there, but something was strange.
It wasn’t moving towards the house.
It was moving upwards.
Slowly.
Very slowly.
The Light Goes Up
“Look,” my boyfriend said. “It’s going up.”
I looked carefully because I wanted to understand what was happening.
The red light rose higher and higher above the trees.
Then I stopped.
“Oh…”
“What?”
“I think I know what it is.”
My boyfriend looked at me.
“What?”
“It’s the moon.”
It’s the Moon!
There was a short silence.
“The moon?”
“Yes.”
We stood at the window while we watched it rise.
A huge red moon was slowly appearing in the dark sky.
There was no fire.
There were no flames.
The house was completely safe.
I started laughing, and my boyfriend started laughing too.
“I was ready to call the fire department because I saw the moon!”
“Yes,” he replied. “That was a very serious emergency.”
“Don’t laugh!”
“I’m not laughing.”
He was definitely laughing.
I laughed too because I finally understood what I had seen.
The Next Morning
The next morning, everything looked different because it was daylight.
The fields were green, the horses were happy, and the dogs were running around the garden.
I checked all the animals when I got up because I wanted to make sure everything was okay.
It was.
I had been scared because I didn’t understand what I was seeing, but everything was actually fine.
Although the night was dark, there was no fire.
Imagination
When we don’t understand something, our imagination can make it seem much worse.
So next time you see a strange red light in the distance, don’t panic.
Look carefully first.
And while I was worrying about the house burning down, the moon was simply rising into the sky.
Luckily, I didn’t call the fire department.
Because if I had, I would have had a very embarrassing conversation.
“Hello, there’s a fire!”
“Where?”
“Well… actually, it’s the moon.”
Yes. That would have been a difficult phone call.
