The White Lady – A2 Graded English Story

A2 Graded stories with Unana Boo

“See you on Sunday. Enjoy,” my husband said as he dropped me off for my weekend alone.

It was my birthday wish: to stay in an old Spanish village with a castle.

The village was small and white, with very old stone walls. The castle was on top of a hill and was now a hotel. Only a few people lived there, so it was very quiet. The streets were narrow and made of stone. Cars could not enter, and high-heeled shoes were useless.

In addition, the village lay amid nature and a large lake. It was the kind of place where nothing happens. For me, this was perfect.

The perfect escape

To begin with, I arrived with a suitcase full of books, my laptop, and a bottle of strawberry tequila. I wanted to escape my busy work life and relax behind the castle walls. I planned to read, write, and sleep.

After I checked in, I unpacked my suitcase. I put all my books next to the bed. I always bring too many books. I like to read more than one at the same time.

That night, I decided not to waste time. I wanted to enjoy every moment of my weekend.

Around midnight, the wind became very strong. It made strange noises in the castle. The corridors were dark and quiet. Suddenly, I felt afraid.

Did I hear someone outside my room?

Did I see a shadow near the window?

The Storm

I opened the door and walked into the corridor. The castle was old, with long hallways, stairs, and many closed doors. The lights were weak, and everything felt scary.

The storm outside became louder. Rain hit the walls, and cold air touched my face. I felt like someone was watching me.

I turned around.

No one was there.

Then everything went silent.

I walked slowly up the stairs to the top floor.

A Surprise

Then I saw her.

At the end of the corridor stood a woman with long black hair. She was wearing a white dress. She did not move. She looked at me.

I stopped. My heart beat very fast. I was wearing black clothes and fluffy reindeer slippers. I could not move.

She looked like a ghost.

The White Lady.

People say that long ago, a young woman lived in the castle. She wanted to marry her fiancé, but he disappeared. She waited for him until she died. Now, her ghost walks through the castle at night.

I blinked.

The woman was gone.

Another one…

Thunder crashed loudly, and I jumped in fear. I lost one of my slippers. I wanted to find it and run back to my room.

As I looked at the floor, I hit something hard.

A person.

I screamed. The man screamed too.

I looked up and saw a tall man holding my slipper. A door opened, and another woman came out. She screamed. Then we all screamed.

A hotel worker ran to us. He looked very confused. People opened their doors and watched.

I did not say anything.

I took my slipper, put it on, and went back to my room.

The White Lady

The next morning, I saw her again at breakfast.

The White Lady.

But this time, she was not a ghost.

She wore jeans and a white cardigan. Her hair was in a ponytail. A man was sitting next to her and holding her hand.

Then I saw the tall man from the night before. He smiled at her.

I understood everything.

There was no ghost.

Only people, secrets, and too much imagination.
